Shoe bench with open shelves in an organized entryway

The Home Edit Method: How Celebrity Homes Stay Organized (and How to Copy It)

When Netflix released Get Organized with The Home Edit in September 2020, organizers Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin took viewers inside the homes of celebrity clients, including Reese Witherspoon, whose company Hello Sunshine produced the series, and Khloé Kardashian. The show's rainbow-sorted shelves and labeled bins became one of the most copied looks in home organization.

Behind the colorful results is a simple, repeatable method. Here is how it works, room by room, with storage that makes it easy at home.

Step 1: Edit

Every Home Edit project starts by taking everything out and deciding what stays. Fewer things means every container can do its job.

Step 2: Categorize and create zones

Group like with like: shoes with shoes, bags with bags, cleaning supplies together. Each category gets one zone so the whole family knows where things live.

Step 3: Contain

Bins, baskets and racks keep each category from spreading. This is where the entryway, the closet and the bathroom change the most.

Step 4: Label and make it pretty

Labels tell everyone where things go back, and the rainbow-order look on the show is a reminder that an organized space can also be beautiful. In a Japanese-inspired home, the same idea works with natural wood, bamboo and neutral tones instead of color.

Step 5: Maintain

Leave a little empty space in every zone and do a quick reset once a week. The system should be easy enough that putting things away takes less effort than leaving them out.
