Marie Kondo's Drawer Rules: How to Fold, Sort and Store the KonMari Way

Marie Kondo turned tidying into a global conversation. Her book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up and the Netflix series Tidying Up with Marie Kondo introduced millions of people to the KonMari Method: keep the things that “spark joy,” and give everything you keep a clear home.

Because the method was born in Japan, it fits small spaces especially well. Here is how its best-known rules translate into drawers, closets and dressers, and the simple tools that make them stick.

Rule 1: Tidy by category, not by room

The KonMari order is clothes, books, papers, komono (miscellaneous items) and, last, sentimental items. Gathering a whole category in one place shows you how much you really own before you decide what stays.

Rule 2: Fold small and store upright

Instead of stacking shirts, KonMari folds them into small rectangles that stand on their edge, like files in a drawer. You see every piece at once, and nothing gets crushed at the bottom of a pile.

Rule 3: Divide drawers with boxes

Kondo is known for using small boxes inside drawers so every item has its own compartment. Dividers stop drawers from turning back into a jumble after a week.

Rule 4: Treat small treasures with care

Jewelry and watches are classic komono. Giving them a dedicated, divided home makes them easy to choose and protects them from scratches.

Rule 5: Make it easy to keep up

In January 2023, Kondo said in interviews that after having her third child she had “kind of given up” on keeping her home perfectly tidy, and was focusing on what brings her joy. It is a useful reminder: a system only works if it fits your real life. Choose a few containers that make the right place the easiest place, and let perfection go.
